Read this blog: How Alberta Mortgage Brokers Help Strengthen Communities

Sponsored by Alberta Real Estate Foundation (AREF)

Did you know that every mortgage transaction you facilitate contributes to initiatives that support a stronger, more resilient Alberta real estate sector

Founded in 1991 under the Real Estate Act, the Alberta Real Estate Foundation is a nonprofit grantmaking organization dedicated to bolstering Alberta’s real estate sector while benefiting all Albertans. With over $32 million invested in more than 800 initiatives, the Foundation has funded projects that range from affordable housing research to mortgage broker professional development, and sustainable land management practices.

Our unique funding model directs interest earned on trust deposits—managed by brokers and property managers—straight to the Foundation. This approach, powered by the collective efforts of Alberta’s real estate professionals and their clients, reinvests funds into projects that enrich our communities, support our industry and our land.

The projects we fund generate practical tools and expert guidance to support real estate professionals and their clients. For mortgage brokers, this translates into access to targeted education, research, and compliance supports—many developed to address the industry’s evolving challenges. These include:

  • Legal information for homeowners – Resources from the Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta provide accessible legal guidance on homeownership, condo ownership, and residential tenancies.
  • Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Program– A program to develop policies, training, and risk assessment tools that assist brokerage members in achieving compliance with anti-money laundering regulations.
  • Mortgage Broker Education Initiative – The Broker-Owner course is designed for practicing mortgage professionals who are interested in starting their own brokerage. Topics covered include brokerage business models, risk management, employee agreements, legislative responsibilities, and so much more.

The bottom line? When you work as a mortgage broker in Alberta, you’re not only serving your clients—you’re also helping fund the development of professional resources, policy innovations, and community initiatives that elevate the industry for everyone.
